The School of Expeditionary Sciences (SOES)
The Fortune Bay School of Expeditionary Sciences has a mission that is twofold. First, we provide education and training for a wide variety of outdoor endeavors. From basic land navigation, rope work, mountain climbing, kayaking, bush craft, food preparation, survival, outdoor leadership, advanced outdoor skills, wilderness rescue and First Responder training. Second, the school also operates “Exploration & Expedition Division”. This division assists in consistently developing highly trained, knowledgeable, capable and effective leaders and instructors. We expect this combination to ultimately provide education and training for the causal hiker to directors of multi-national corporations.
The school Cadre includes experienced outdoor professionals, corporate and business leaders, first responder leaders, counselors and other professionals that add to the effectiveness of the program.
The school combines a self-paced online curriculum and a traditional “hands on” curriculum. A graduate of certain curriculums can then become an advanced member or a Basic to Master Expedition Leader.
The school is supported by membership fees and class fees. The school offers a comprehensive education in outdoor skills, first response skills, expedition skills and leadership. The courses are offered from Jan to May and September to October each year. Courses are also available for groups of 10 or more.
Individuals who are not members are able to enroll in all of our traditional “hands on” courses for a fee. Individuals who are interested in “enrolling” in the school (including the online school) are first considered for Guild Membership with the Fortune Bay Expedition Team. Guild members are offered access to the online curriculums at no cost. In addition, they are given discounted rates of our traditional curriculums.
In the future, the team plans to open the online school for public enrollment allowing members of the public to pay tuition to take courses
Staff and instructors of the school operate the school on a day to day basis. They are also the Expedition Leaders of the team and lead a variety of wilderness, travel and adventure events.
